High current furnace transformer is arranged by providing low voltage windings and organized in a closed delta configuration. In electrical induction furnaces the heat is applied by the coil by inducing current through it. The magnetic field produced by induction coil induce eddy currents leading to heating of coil. Furnace transformers are used for stepping down voltages form the level between 11 and 33 kV to a few hundred volts.

Furnace transformers used in steel manufacturing plants in the steel smelting section where the base metal is extracted from the ore. Furnace transformers are utilized for supplying power to electric furnace. It steps down high voltage to a lower voltage for arc furnace requirement. Furnace transformers installed for charging open arc furnaces are subjected to a number of short circuits per melt. This is due to the fact that the material which is melted collapses across the electrodes. Due to extreme nature of process the furnace transformers have large tapping ranges. Here online tap changers play a vital role. Furnace transformers are equipped with online tap changers rather than the inbuilt tap changers to facilitate maintenance operations to be carried out smoothly. To further reduce the downtime furnace transformers are installed with plug in diverters. This allows a quick changeover or replacement of part in case of breakdown or scheduled maintenance in plant area.
